Limestone karsts in the Andaman Sea in morning haze with still water and a longtail boat

Destination No. 15Bangkok, the Andaman Sea and the north

Thailand

A city on a river, a sea full of limestone.

Thailand works as a journey in two or three chapters. Bangkok is the first: a city best understood from the river, with boats instead of taxis, temples early in the morning and a food culture that begins on the street.

After that the season decides. From November to April the Andaman Sea lies calm — limestone islands, bays, long days on the water. If you prefer mountains, head north to Chiang Mai for monasteries, craft and cooler nights.

Why we like this place

Three reasons

  1. 01

Because the Chao Phraya organises the city, and a room on the river changes the stay.

  2. 02

Because you eat superbly in Thailand without it ever becoming ceremonious.

  3. 03

Because an hour of flying separates the capital from an empty bay.

For planning

Best time to visit
November to early April
The dry season brings calm water in the west and pleasant evenings in Bangkok. May to October is wetter, greener and better value; the Gulf of Thailand runs on a different rain calendar from the Andaman coast.
Suggested length
Ten to fourteen nights
Three nights in Bangkok, then seven by the sea or in the north. With only a week, drop the north — not the city.
Pure Voyage NoteDestination Note

How do you structure a trip to Thailand?

Two or three nights in Bangkok first, then the south. The order matters: after the islands the city is hard work; the other way round it is a good introduction. The Andaman season runs November to April; the Gulf side shifts to summer. One domestic flight saves half a travel day.
