Houses With a View That Stays

A good view is rarely an accident. Six addresses where the outlook is the real room.

There are hotels one remembers for the furniture and hotels one remembers for the window. The second group is the smaller one.

Water

Aman Venice above the Grand Canal when February fog sits on the water. Mandarin Oriental on Lake Como, from the terrace towards the western shore. In both cases the best hour is before breakfast.

Mountains and desert

Amangiri, where the view does not end, and the Dolomites in the first snow. Landscapes that need no furnishing.

Cities

Roof terraces are rarely the best place. Often it is the second floor above a lane where something is happening. A view is not always a distance.

If the view matters to you, say so before booking. It is the single detail that changes a recommendation most.

What should guide the choice of room?

The aspect, and the time of day you are actually in the room. Early risers gain from an eastern outlook; anyone who spends evenings on the terrace, from a western one. Ask about the floor and about trees or balconies above — neither appears on a floor plan and both change the view.
