Greece
Greece is usually chosen from photographs and planned around ferries. Both mislead. The differences between islands lie not in the water but in the wind, the number of beds and whether anything is still open in the evening.
We rarely recommend more than one island per journey, but always a house that carries the stay. If you want to see more, take a boat rather than move your luggage.
Why we recommend it
- Because the houses built here in recent years have found a language of their own: stone, lime, shade, little decoration.
- Because in May and October the country is quiet and still warm — two windows barely found elsewhere in Europe.
- Because the food is reliably good without a reservation being required.

Suits: Two or three nights, spring and autumn
The caldera view is real; so are the crowds. In May or October, and with a house outside Oia, the island stays what you came for.

Suits: Returning guests, quiet, summer
Few roads, few houses, one harbour. For guests who are not looking for variety but for its opposite.

The Peloponnese
Suits: Spring, wellness, journeys by car
Mainland rather than island: olive groves, ancient sites, hardly any transfers. The most dependable choice in April and May, while the islands are still cool.

Mykonos
Kalesma
Twenty-seven suites on a slope above Ornos Bay, built in Cycladic manner with stone walls and timber. Proof that Mykonos can be quiet without leaving the island.

Mykonos for guests who do not really want Mykonos: private suites, a long view, well away from the noise.

- Travellers who like Mykonos but do not want to live in the middle of it.

- May, June and September into early October.
Folegandros
Gundari
A house on an undeveloped cliff, built from volcanic stone and set so deep into the slope it is barely visible from the sea. Folegandros has no airport and no scene — which is the point.
Why this house
The quietest place in this selection. Only for guests who are at ease with space and wind.

- Travellers who know the Cyclades and want the version without an audience.

- May, June and September. The house closes in winter.
Mystras, Peloponnes
Euphoria Retreat
A retreat on the slope below the Byzantine ruins of Mystras, built around a subterranean domed pool hall. The programmes are serious rather than decorative.

The Peloponnese in spring: the one address here where a structured stay makes sense.

- April to June and October. The valley turns hot at the height of summer.
Kourouta, Peloponnes
Dexamenes
A 1920s wine factory on the Ionian Sea whose concrete tanks became rooms. Raw, still and entirely undecorated — architecturally the most singular thing in Greece right now.
Why this house
Unusual and honest — a former winery on the sea, for guests with an eye for architecture.

- Travellers drawn to architecture and industrial history who do not need marble.
- Season
- May to June and September; the coast is pleasantly empty then.

Best time to travel
When to go
In Greece the difference between June and August is greater than between two islands.
Late April to June
Green, cool in the evening, little meltemi. The sea stays fresh until June; the Peloponnese is at its best in these weeks.
July and August
Warm, busy, windy. The meltemi can cancel ferries and boat days — on the small islands, plan for it.
September and October
The best window: warm sea, quiet harbours, mild evenings. From mid-October the island houses close one after another.

One island or two?
With seven nights, one. Island-hopping sounds easy and in practice costs a day, often with a ferry and waiting. Two islands repay themselves from ten nights, or when a boat makes the connection. And keep the last night in Athens if the flight home is early.

- Paros and Antiparos for quiet days with character, Milos for landscape, Crete for length and variety, Santorini for a few nights with a view. If you want calm, stay outside the main towns.
- How disruptive is the meltemi in summer?
- In the Cyclades it blows reliably from mid-July to late August. It cools pleasantly but can cancel ferries and boat days. If sailing matters, travel in June or September.
- Does Greece still work in October?
- The first half of October is one of the finest windows: warm sea, empty paths, houses still open. After that many island hotels close until spring.
