Destination No. 06 — Cyclades, Greece
Paros
The Cycladic island that is still lived in rather than staged.
Paros sits in the middle of the Cyclades and has kept its ordinary life: marble quarries, fishing harbours, courtyards with lemon trees. Naoussa in the north is lively at night, Lefkes inland is silent, and between them lie bays where little happens beyond the wind.
The island suits travellers who love the Aegean but not the performance of it. Hire a car, find a different bay each day, and eat in the evening where the tables still stand on gravel.
Why we like this place
Three reasons
01
Because the meltemi cools high summer and keeps the sea moving.
02
Because Antiparos is ten minutes away by boat and quieter still.
03
Because the cooking has stayed rural: capers, goat's cheese, fish landed that morning.
For planning
- Best time to visit
- Late May to early July, September
- June is warm and still calm; September brings the warmest water and empty coves. August is full and windy, and most houses close from November to April.
- Suggested length
- Five to seven nights
- A week is not long here. If you want two islands, make Paros the longer half and Santorini or Naxos the short opening.
How many nights on Paros?
Four or five, ideally paired with a second island. Paros is large enough for different days — Naoussa in the evening, the marble quarries and Lefkes in the morning, Antiparos by boat. The meltemi blows reliably in July and August; if you are sensitive to wind, travel in June or September and choose an east-facing bay.
