Where to Travel in October

The month when Europe is still warm and the rest of the world already open.

Among travellers who can choose freely, October is the most popular month of the year, and with reason. The Mediterranean still holds its temperature, the cities have their audiences back, and in many long-haul destinations the dry season begins.

Italy and Greece

Tuscany is at its best in early October: harvest, low light, restaurants without a wait. In the Cyclades the first half of October is the last dependable swimming week; many houses close after that.

Morocco and Andalusia

Marrakech loses the summer heat and gains clarity. Andalusia is warm enough for long days outdoors and cool enough for cities.

Long haul

Spring begins in South Africa, Japan shows its first autumn colour late in the month, and Oman and Jordan become pleasant again at all.

What we advise against

The Caribbean is at the end of hurricane season, the Maldives are wetter than in winter, and much of Southeast Asia needs until November.

Anyone travelling in October should book early: it is the month in which the good houses fill first.

What makes October a good month to travel?

The Mediterranean is still warm, the towns are empty and prices drop noticeably. At the same time, game viewing in South Africa and Botswana is at its best. The catch: many houses in Greece and Italy close mid-month. Check closing dates before you fix the flights.
