The Best Time to Visit the Maldives

Between dry season, price peaks and the quiet shoulder months there is more room than the brochures suggest.

Calm lagoon with white sand and shallow water in morning light

The Maldives have two seasons and three price levels. Understanding how they relate makes for a calmer trip, and usually a cheaper one.

Dry season: December to April

Dependable weather, clear visibility underwater, calm seas. The weeks around Christmas and New Year are the most expensive of the year and often sold out far ahead.

Shoulder season: May and October

Our preferred recommendation. It rains, but usually briefly and in the afternoon. Rates sit well below high season, the islands are quieter, and visibility stays good on most days.

Monsoon months: June to September

Changeable, with wind and swell. Still of interest to divers at certain atolls, where mantas and whale sharks appear more reliably.

A note on choosing the island

The reef matters more than the season. Resorts with a house reef stay interesting in mixed weather; islands without one need good weather to work.

If you are flexible, travel in May or October. If you want Christmas, book a year ahead.

How bad is the rainy season really?

Less bad than its reputation. Between May and October rain usually comes in short, heavy bursts with sun in between — and the resorts are markedly quieter and better value. Anyone hoping for mantas and whale sharks travels then anyway. For reliably calm seas, January to March remains the safe choice.
