The Best Time to Travel to Japan — Beyond the Blossom
Cherry blossom and autumn colour are rightly famous and also the hardest weeks of the year. What we suggest instead.

Japan travels well year-round, but its two best-known windows are the most expensive and crowded. To see Kyoto calmly, consider the edges.
Late March to early April: blossom
The bloom is real and beautiful but unpredictable, shifting by up to ten days each year, with peak rates and long minimum stays. Kyoto houses are gone twelve months ahead.
If it must be blossom, we plan early and across two cities so a shifted date does not define the trip.
May and early June: our recommendation
After Golden Week it turns quiet, the green is fresh, temperatures are kind. Kyoto gardens are near empty early in the morning, and rates fall well below spring.
November: autumn colour with more room
Momiji is more reliable than blossom and moves south over several weeks. The second half of November is busy in Kyoto; the first is pleasant.
What is often underestimated
June to mid-July is the rainy season: warm, humid, with quiet temples and low rates. January is cold, clear and as empty as Kyoto ever gets — a serious suggestion for a second visit.
Plan three nights per city and two nights in a ryokan. One night is not enough to understand the rhythm.
If you are flexible, we suggest May. If it must be blossom, let us speak about a year ahead.
