When to Travel to Botswana, Month by Month

Botswana has no bad season, only very different ones. Which month suits which kind of trip.

Okavango Delta waterways in morning light

We are asked about the best time to visit Botswana more often than anything else. The short answer: July to October for dense game viewing, March to May for landscape, quiet and markedly lower rates. The longer answer depends on whether this is your first safari or your fifth.

July to October: the dependable window

In the dry season wildlife concentrates around the remaining water of the Okavango. Vegetation is low, sightlines are open, encounters are frequent. If you are going for the first time and have images in mind you would like fulfilled, travel now.

Price and availability follow. Good camps sell out nine to twelve months ahead and rates sit well above the annual average. Nights are cold and July morning drives genuinely so.

November to February: green, wide, uncrowded

The rains bring short, heavy afternoon storms and a landscape few travellers picture: green, tall, soft. It is the season of births and of birds. Game viewing is less predictable because water stands everywhere.

For returning safari guests who care about light and photography, it is an underrated window at noticeably lower rates.

March to May: the quiet interval

After the rains the land stays green, the air is clear and camps are barely occupied. The delta slowly fills with water that fell months earlier in the Angolan highlands, and mokoro travel becomes possible again.

When someone asks for the best balance of experience, quiet and price, we say April and May.

What we recommend in practice

Botswana works best in combination: three nights in the water delta, three in a dry area such as Linyanti or the Kalahari. A single camp shows only one facet.

Expect light aircraft between camps, a 20 kg soft-bag limit and days that begin at 5.30. If that is not for you, private reserves in South Africa are often the better fit.

Tell us whether this is a first safari and how much movement you want in a day. The month follows from that, not the other way round.
