Destination No. 10 — Okavango Delta and Linyanti
Botswana
Water in the Kalahari — and very few people in it.
Botswana decided early on few guests and high fees, and that shapes every journey there. Camps are small, concessions large, and you rarely share a sighting with a second vehicle.
The Okavango Delta is the heart of it: an inland delta flooded each year during the dry winter. You move by boat, by mokoro and on foot — one of the few regions in Africa where walking safaris are entirely normal.
Why we like this place
Three reasons
01
Because the flight in by light aircraft already explains why this landscape is different.
02
Because elephant herds live here with a calm you only understand standing beside them.
03
Because nothing happens in the evening beyond fire, stars and sounds that need no explanation.
For planning
- Best time to visit
- June to October
- The flood peaks, paradoxically, in the dry season; July to September are the most dependable months for water and game. The green season from December to March brings young animals, birds and markedly lower rates.
- Suggested length
- Six to nine nights
- Two camps in different habitats, three nights each — delta and dryland — make the best-balanced journey.
When is the best time for the Okavango Delta?
June to September. The floodwater arrives in the dry season — an unusual combination that allows mokoro trips and dense concentrations of game at the same time. Nights are cold, days clear. Between January and March the delta is green and considerably cheaper, but some camps close and access becomes difficult.

In Botswana we work with a small number of privately run camps; the choice follows the water level and the season.
