South Africa is the most accessible safari country: an overnight flight from Europe, no time difference, good roads, dependable houses. What makes it particular is the combination — city, winelands and bush sit within one journey.
The usual mistake is wanting too much of it. Three stops in ten nights works well; four becomes logistics.

Franschhoek and Stellenbosch: wine estates, good cooking, short distances. The quiet part between city and bush.

Suits: Safari, a first journey to Africa
The most dependable sightings in the country, low malaria risk in the dry season and reached by a short flight. Three nights is the minimum.

Singita Ebony Lodge
Singita's first lodge, opened on the Sand River in 1993 and carefully renewed since. The Sabi Sand is among Africa's most reliable leopard country; the animals are used to vehicles, not to people.

Best time to travel
When to go
Bush and Cape run on opposite seasons — October brings the two together.
May to September
Dry season in the north: the best sightings, cool mornings, few mosquitoes. At the Cape it is winter — wet and green.
October and November
Our preferred combination: the bush is still dry and the Cape already warm. The houses are not yet full.
December to March
Summer at the Cape; green and hot in the bush with thicker vegetation. Christmas and January are expensive and book out early.
How many nights on safari?
Three, better four. Two nights mean three drives, and the first usually goes on getting your bearings. Combining Cape Town and the bush, put the safari last: after early mornings in the bush, the city is harder work than the other way round.

- When is the best time for a South African safari?
- May to October. In the dry season animals gather at water, the grass is low and sightlines open up. Green season from December to March brings young animals, birds and soft light.
- How many nights does a safari need?
- Three to four per camp, otherwise the trip is spent arriving. Two camps in contrasting landscapes beat four fleeting stops.
- Can safari be combined with Cape Town?
- Yes, and we suggest safari first, the Cape after. The winelands and the coast make the calmer close — the right rhythm after early bush mornings.
