Between December and March the point is reliability rather than discovery: warm water, settled weather, and a journey that justifies a week away.
The houses here sit in regions whose dry season falls exactly in the European winter — with a note on which weeks are genuinely dependable.
Why this recommendation exists
Winter travel depends on weather windows, not on preferences. Choose the wrong fortnight and you get rain in a place that would have been flawless two weeks later.
What this recommendation is not
If you travel over Christmas and New Year, decide early: in those two weeks the better houses are taken far in advance.
The houses
01 — Raa-Atoll, Malediven
A house that does not treat art as decoration: installations by international artists stand in the water, the forest and the villas. The architecture stays quiet around them.
Why this house
The Maldives at their best: from January to March the lagoon is calm and visibility underwater at its clearest.
02 — Noonu-Atoll, Malediven
Overwater villas in an enclosed lagoon whose colour is unusual even by Maldivian standards. The slide and the retractable bedroom roof are play — the lagoon is the reason.
Why this house
For families and longer stays — plenty of water, few distances, and days that begin without a clock.
03 — Riviera Maya, Mexiko
A former private estate on Xpu-Ha beach — twenty-nine rooms, a great deal of lawn, very little programme.

Mexico's Caribbean coast is dry and mild in January; the house stays private even with Tulum nearby.
04 — Hoher Atlas, Marokko
A kasbah in the Atlas mountains, an hour from Marrakech and in another world entirely.

Morocco in winter: clear air, snow on the Atlas, warm middays — and only four hours' flying time away.
05 — Franschhoek, Südafrika
A Cape Dutch wine farm with a three-hectare kitchen garden that governs everything else.

Which winter weeks are dependable?
In the Maldives and Mexico, mid-January to mid-March is the steadiest stretch; the Christmas weeks cost more and feel fuller. Morocco carries January and February by day, though nights turn cold. South Africa is in high summer — long days, but also wind along the Cape coast.
