The Indian Ocean is often treated as one region, though the Maldives, the Seychelles and Mozambique are different journeys: different water, different seasons, different pace.
This recommendation sorts by suitability rather than facilities. Anyone who wants to snorkel travels differently from someone with ten days and no plans.
Why this recommendation exists
Because the flight is long and mistakes are therefore expensive. Reef, transfer type and month shape the stay more than the house does.
What this recommendation is not
If you want excursions and variety, the mainland serves you better. These islands reward staying.
The houses
01 — Baa-Atoll, Malediven
The island that founded the idea of barefoot luxury in 1995 and still takes it seriously: dense jungle, no shoes, its own recycling and glass studios. Larger than our other recommendations — but so overgrown you never notice.

The best house reef here, and enough island to spend a week without a boat.
02 — Raa-Atoll, Malediven
A house that does not treat art as decoration: installations by international artists stand in the water, the forest and the villas. The architecture stays quiet around them.
Why this house
For shorter stays: a quick seaplane transfer, a calm lagoon and an easy daily rhythm.
03 — Seychellen
A private island of eleven villas, cleared of introduced species and replanted over decades. You share it with giant tortoises and almost no one else.

Granite rather than atoll — greener, cooler and the more dependable choice in the European summer.
04 — Benguerra Island, Mosambik
Twelve free-standing residences across three hundred hectares of island, each with its own stretch of sand.
Why this house
Mozambique for guests who want beach with space; it follows a safari particularly well.
05 — Nosy Ankao, Madagaskar
Fourteen villas on an island off northern Madagascar, reachable only by helicopter, with a marine conservation programme that the operation funds. The effort of arriving is part of what protects it.

The most demanding journey here, in return for water and wildlife you will not find together elsewhere.

What decides the right island?
The reef and the transfer. A house with an intact house reef changes the day more than any villa; seaplanes fly in daylight only, which costs late arrivals a night in Malé. The Maldives are calmest from January to March, while the Seychelles also carry the European summer.
