Antarctica Expedition

Antarctic Peninsula, South Georgia, Falklands

The only place where silence has a size.

The Drake Passage takes two days and is part of the point. Then a landscape without scale begins: tabular bergs, glacier fronts, colonies of tens of thousands of penguins, and nights that never fully darken.

Modern expedition ships carry 100 to 200 guests, with Zodiacs, kayaks and a team of biologists and glaciologists aboard. Landings follow ice and weather rather than a programme — unsettling at first, and clearly right by the second day.

With more time, take the long route via South Georgia: king penguins in six figures, Shackleton's grave, and bays that rank among the most affecting on earth.

Our view

Why we recommend it

Because nothing else dissolves scale in the same way. Travellers rarely return with anecdotes; they return with a changed relationship to size and quiet.

Best time to travel
November to March. November: untouched ice. December and January: chicks and longest light. February and March: whales.
Suggested duration
Eleven nights for the peninsula; eighteen to twenty-two including South Georgia.
Who it is best for
Travellers who want to see something incomparable once; photographers. Not advisable with strong seasickness or limited mobility — Zodiac boarding is demanding.

Pure Voyage note

Build in at least two buffer days in Ushuaia. Flight delays to Tierra del Fuego are common, and the ship does not wait.

    Ushuaia, Argentina

Two nights before embarkation, above the Beagle Channel.

  • Alvear Palace

    Buenos Aires

The classic overture when arriving via Europe.

  • Explora Patagonia

    Torres del Paine, Chile

Five nights afterwards, if Patagonia should still become land.

Pure Voyage NoteJourney Note

Which window suits which interest?

November brings untouched ice; December and January the penguin chicks and longest days; February and March the best chance of whales. The Drake Passage costs two days each way — if you would rather fly it, book early. Layers rather than one heavy coat: the ship is warm throughout.

Common questions

What guests ask us about this

Private yacht or small ship?
A yacht gives you freedom over route and rhythm; a small ship removes the organising and the cost. From roughly eight people the yacht starts to make financial sense too.
How far ahead should you book?
Six to twelve months for the Mediterranean summer. Good crews and the sought-after weeks in July and September go first.
