A country that shows four landscapes in a day and explains none of them.
The Ring Road runs 1,330 kilometres and can be driven in eight days — though it should not be. Twelve days allow the turnings where Iceland becomes interesting: the eastern fjords, Snæfellsnes, the highlands in summer.
There are no trees to block the view, so you watch weather arrive. That shapes the day more than any plan: you drive on when it closes in, and stay when the light holds.
The hotels are small and often family-owned. Luxury here means hot water from the ground, a good kitchen and nobody else in sight.

Why we recommend it
Because Iceland is one of the few self-drive journeys where the driving remains the main event. You come for the road between the places, not the places.
- Best time to travel
- June to August for midnight sun and open highlands; September and October for autumn colour and first aurora. In winter, the south only, with a driver.
- Suggested duration
- Ten to fourteen days for the full ring; eight for south and west alone.
- Who it is best for
- Photographers, couples, families with teenagers. Not for anyone who needs restaurants and evening variety.

Ten, ideally twelve. Seven gets you round it but not through it. Expect weather that rewrites plans and keep one free afternoon per section. In summer the nights stay light, which tempts longer drives than the body wants — keep the daily legs deliberately short.

- Self-drive or with a driver?
- Self-drive when the road itself is part of the pleasure — Tuscany, the Alentejo, the Highlands. With a driver when hairpins, cities or long stages would otherwise eat the day.
- How many nights per stop?
- Two at least, three ideally. One night per house means luggage rather than travel — and the best hours almost always come on the second morning.
