Northern Scotland narrows as you go: eventually only single-track roads remain, with passing places where drivers nod to each other. Wester Ross and Assynt are the emptiest landscapes in Western Europe.
Between them: whisky in Speyside, country houses with fires, boats to Skye, and the chance to spend a whole day doing nothing but walking.
Weather is part of the journey rather than its opponent. Four seasons in an afternoon is normal — and the moment the cloud breaks is the one you came for.

Why we recommend it
Because few European landscapes are this empty while remaining this well served. However remote the day, there is always a warm house at the end of it.
- Best time to travel
- May to September. May and June are dry and midge-free; from July the midges arrive. October brings colour and quiet.
- Suggested duration
- Ten to fourteen days; combines well with two nights on the Royal Scotsman.
- Who it is best for
- Walkers, whisky drinkers, couples. Less suited to anyone who needs fixed mealtimes and dense infrastructure.

Plan no more than two moves a week. The distances look short, but on single-track roads every kilometre takes twice as long — which is not a complaint.

Driving times and midges. Single-track roads with passing places are slow, and between June and August midges make evenings outdoors unpleasant — May and September are kinder. Book country dinners in advance; outside the villages kitchens close early and there is rarely an alternative within reach.

- Self-drive or with a driver?
- Self-drive when the road itself is part of the pleasure — Tuscany, the Alentejo, the Highlands. With a driver when hairpins, cities or long stages would otherwise eat the day.
- How many nights per stop?
- Two at least, three ideally. One night per house means luggage rather than travel — and the best hours almost always come on the second morning.
