Our Favourite Hotels in Tuscany
Three houses, three very different Tuscan journeys, and the question of which one suits you.
8 minutes

Tuscany is not a single journey. Between a week in Florence and a week in the Val d'Orcia lie not only ninety kilometres but two ideas of what rest means. We rarely recommend more than three addresses, because almost every wish can be met within them.
Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco — the Val d'Orcia
A borgo on its own estate, surrounded by vineyards and rows of cypress. Guests here sometimes do not leave the property at all. At its best in the last week of September, when the light flattens and the harvest begins. Five nights is a good length.
Four Seasons Firenze — the city with a garden
A palazzo with the largest private garden in the city, twenty minutes on foot from the Duomo. The combination of city and retreat is the real reason to stay: the Uffizi in the morning, a book under old trees in the afternoon.
COMO Castello del Nero — the Chianti
A twelfth-century castle between Florence and Siena, with a kitchen considerably better than the location suggests and a spa one actually uses. For travellers who want to be out during the day and stay in at night.
How to combine them
The obvious pairing is city and country: three nights in Florence, then four in the Val d'Orcia. The reverse works less well — after the quiet of the countryside, summer Florence feels loud.
Which of the three is right depends less on the house than on the pace you are after. We are glad to talk that through beforehand.
