Passalacqua or Villa d'Este? Two Houses on Lake Como
Same shore, both considered first addresses — and they mean entirely different things.
6 minutes

Anyone looking at Lake Como arrives at these two names. The pictures look alike; the experience does not. We recommend both, rarely to the same guest.
Passalacqua: a private house with 24 rooms
The villa above Moltrasio opened in 2022 and feels like staying with a family that happens to be exceptionally well furnished. Terraced gardens, a music room, almost no crowd. You have breakfast wherever the morning suggests.
Right for couples, for quiet, and for guests who prefer restraint to presence. Anyone who likes bars and people will find it still.
Villa d'Este: the grand house
A hotel since 1873, Villa d'Este has the scale of a small town: park, floating pool, a bar with an audience, guests returning for decades. It is a house with a public life, and that is the point rather than a limitation.
For families, longer stays and evenings with something happening, it is the more coherent choice.
What actually decides it
Room category: at Passalacqua even the smallest room is good; at Villa d'Este the category matters greatly, and a room without lake view is a different trip.
Season: both close in winter. The calmest good weeks are late April and mid-September.
Length: Passalacqua carries three or four nights, Villa d'Este a week.
If you are unsure: do you want the house to yourself, or do you want to be part of a house? That answers it.
