Destination No. 04 — Lombardy, Italy
Lake Como
Water that keeps the mountains still, and mornings that ask nothing.
The lake is at its best before nine, when the ferries are half empty and the water lies like grey silk. Villas that look imperious in photographs go quiet at that hour: shutters closed, gravel raked, gardeners working among the hydrangeas.
One comes here to do very little. A boat in the morning, a long lunch under wisteria, an afternoon behind half-closed shutters. Choose the western shore if you want to walk to dinner, and the heights above Bellagio if you would rather see the lake than be on it.
Why we like this place
Three reasons
01
Because the public ferry is the best way to understand the lake — forty minutes, one bench, everything passing by.
02
Because the gardens here are not an attraction but ordinary life: camellias in spring, hydrangeas in summer.
03
Because October offers the same light as June with half the traffic.
For planning
- Best time to visit
- Late April to early June, September and October
- Spring and early autumn are the most dependable: warm enough for the boat, cool enough for the paths above the lake. August is the busiest and the least itself.
- Suggested length
- Three to five nights
- Three nights allow two days on the water and one good dinner. Five if you walk the Greenway, take the train to Milan, or simply stay put.
Which shore should you stay on?
For a first visit, the western shore between Como and Tremezzo — short distances, gardens, good boat links. Bellagio is charming but busy by day. For quiet, head north towards Varenna or the eastern shore. In every case: the boat beats the car, and the timetable shapes the day more than any reservation.
