Destination No. 02 — Veneto, Italy
Venice
A city that is one thing before eight and another after.
Venice has a reputation for crowds, and it is accurate — for about six hours a day. Rise early and dine late and you find a quiet, almost village-like city: delivery boats, churches without queues, squares where children play.
The decision that shapes a stay is the address. Cannaregio and Dorsoduro are residential and still in the evening; the Giudecca gives you distance and the view back at the city. From any of them San Marco is close enough — but not so close that you live inside it.
Why we like this place
Three reasons
01
Because there is no traffic, so you walk differently, hear differently and tire sooner.
02
Because the art is not gathered in one quarter but spread across the city — a Tintoretto in a scuola, a Biennale in old shipyards.
03
Because an evening in a bacaro with three cicchetti says more about Venice than any menu with a view.
For planning
- Best time to visit
- April to early June, late September to November
- Spring is mild and bright, autumn softer and markedly emptier. November brings fog, the occasional high water and the finest melancholy. July and August are hot and busy.
- Suggested length
- Three nights
- Two nights cover the essentials, three allow the islands and one unplanned day. Longer is worth it mainly if you use Venice as a base for the Veneto.
When is Venice at its best?
November and the second half of January. The city is empty, the light low, the museums accessible. It can be cold and wet — a small price with the right shoes. If you need warmth, take early May or the start of October. Between June and August Venice only works if you are out before eight.

Price guidance
What a journey in Italy costs, roughly
- from around €400 per person per night
- €700 to €1,200 in high season
The difference comes less from the house than from the week and the room category.
Guide prices per person per night in a double room, excluding flights. Not a quote — an orientation before the first conversation.
