Portugal
Portugal is often mistaken for a cheaper version of Spain. It is the opposite: quieter, slower, less concerned with effect. The Alentejo has more in common with inland Andalusia than with the Algarve.
For us Portugal is a country destination with a coast, not the reverse. If you only want the sea, warmer water exists elsewhere; if you want space and good food, you will find both here with a matter-of-factness that has become rare.

- Because Lisbon and Porto are under four hours from central Europe — short journeys included.

Comporta and the coast
Suits: Summer, families, beach days without the crowd
Miles of sand behind dunes and pines. The Atlantic is cool and honest — not the Mediterranean, but there is room.

Suits: Autumn, wine, slow days by the river
Terraced slopes above the river, an hour from Porto. During the September and October harvest, the finest region in the country.

Suits: Two nights at either end
Both cities carry two nights well and three rarely better. Useful as a prelude to the countryside, not as the centre of the journey.

An estate held by the same family for two hundred years and reopened with care: stables became rooms, the village stayed a village. The Alentejo here is as empty as Europe rarely is.

Vermelho
Thirteen rooms in the centre of Melides, furnished over years by Christian Louboutin with Portuguese craftsmen — azulejos, ironwork, regional furniture. A house with a signature that stands by it.

Small, colourful and personal; the counterpoint to the quiet Alentejo, ten minutes from the beach.

Comporta
Quinta da Comporta
A house among rice fields, built from wood, lime and thatch in the local language. Comporta kept its character because nothing was built here for a long time — this house shows it.

For families in summer: rice fields, dunes, short distances and no need for a programme.

When to go
Portugal has two very good windows and a summer that asks for shade.
April to June
The finest time in the Alentejo: green, in flower, pleasantly warm. The Atlantic is still cold, but the country is open.
July and August
Hot inland, mild on the coast. Comporta is busy but large enough; inland, the house should have a pool and shade.
September and October
Harvest in the Douro, warm sea, empty beaches. Our recommendation for a first journey to Portugal.

Hire car or transfers?
In the Alentejo and the Douro, a car — the journey there consists of roads between villages, and transfers soon cost more than the freedom is worth. In Lisbon and Porto, none: parking costs time and patience. Simplest is to collect the car as you leave the city.

- When is the best time for Portugal?
- April to June and September to October. The Alentejo is green in spring, the Algarve quiet in autumn, and Lisbon and Porto are far kinder on foot outside high summer.
- Does Portugal travel well with children?
- Very well. Short distances, welcoming houses, calm beaches in the western Algarve. We usually combine two nights in the city with a week in the country or on the coast.
