Short trips almost always fail on travel time. When a third of the days goes to transfers, the weekend becomes a journey with a view.
This recommendation names houses within a few hours of central Europe that still amount to a genuine change of place.
Why this recommendation exists
Three nights are not a small holiday but a form of their own. They work when there is exactly one address and nothing left to decide.
What this recommendation is not
Long-haul is deliberately absent. Beyond about four hours' flying, a long weekend rarely repays itself.
The houses
01 — Moltrasio, Comer See
An eighteenth-century villa restored over years by the family who owns it: frescoes, fabrics and furniture kept rather than referenced. You stay in rooms that were living rooms first.

Two hours to Milan, an hour to the lake — and the day is not over yet.
02 — Mallorca
A nineteenth-century fortress on the bay of Palma, cut into rock and converted so carefully the intervention barely registers. Not a house for people who need a beach — one for people who want silence.

Mallorca out of season: quiet, cool in the evening, and twenty minutes from the airport.
03 — Umbrien
A thousand-year-old castle on an estate of some 1,500 hectares, brought back by one family over two decades. Everything inside — lamps, handles, beds — was designed and made on site.
Why this house
For three nights without a car and without a plan; the house carries the stay on its own.
04 — Deià, Mallorca
Two sixteenth-century manor houses above the artists' village of Deià, among olive groves and citrus. The combination of art collection, Tramuntana light and long house history exists nowhere else on Mallorca.

Deià in spring, when the coast road is empty and the terraces are already warm at midday.
05 — Lamego, Douro
A nineteenth-century quinta above the Douro terraces, with one of Portugal's best spas and access to estates that otherwise stay closed.

Porto plus an hour's drive, then vineyards — a weekend that feels longer than it is.

How do you plan three nights well?
One place and an early flight. Arriving on Thursday evening gains a full day over Friday morning. Skip the hire car if the house offers transfers — with three nights, hours behind the wheel are the most expensive item. And book the first evening in the house.
