Highway 1, driven in the direction that keeps the ocean on your side.
North to south the coast stays on the passenger side, and that is the whole difference: you stop where you like without crossing traffic. Big Sur is the stretch you come for — a hundred kilometres of cliff, fog and redwoods that reach the water.
Between them, places that stand on their own: Carmel and Monterey Bay, the wine country around Santa Ynez, Santa Barbara with its Spanish architecture and a very good market.
Los Angeles at the end is a decision. If you like the city, stay three nights; if not, drive to Ojai and fly from there.

Why we recommend it
Because for all its fame this road delivers — provided you drive it slowly and outside the summer months.
- Best time to travel
- April to June and September to November. July and August often hold coastal fog all day, and the roads are full.
- Suggested duration
- Ten to twelve days; under eight, Big Sur becomes a transit.
- Who it is best for
- Couples, families, first-time California. Less suited to anyone uneasy with cliff roads and fog.

North to south. The coast then sits on your side and the viewpoints need no turning back. Expect morning fog, especially in June and July — afternoons are the clearer half of the day. Big Sur asks for patience: short in kilometres, long in hours.

- Self-drive or with a driver?
- Self-drive when the road itself is part of the pleasure — Tuscany, the Alentejo, the Highlands. With a driver when hairpins, cities or long stages would otherwise eat the day.
- How many nights per stop?
- Two at least, three ideally. One night per house means luggage rather than travel — and the best hours almost always come on the second morning.
