Which Greek Island Suits You?

Cyclades, Ionian, Crete: the differences are larger than the postcards suggest.

Cycladic architecture with bougainvillea in afternoon light

Greece is not a decision about a country but about an island, and the wrong island is the most common reason an otherwise good trip does not hold. A guide by travelling style rather than fame.

For quiet and landscape: Paros, Sifnos, Milos

Paros has gained substance without becoming loud: good houses, serious cooking, beaches that still breathe in August. Sifnos is the island for food and walking, Milos for coastlines you only understand from a boat.

People who ask for Santorini but mean quiet usually mean Paros.

For evenings: Mykonos

Mykonos is dismissed too easily. If you want restaurants and movement, nowhere else offers this density — provided you choose the right side of the island and travel in June or September.

For green and space: Corfu and Crete

The Ionian islands are greener and cooler. Corfu carries a week with children well. Crete is not an island stay but a small tour: west for landscape, east for houses, with driving times to plan for.

The practical layer

Late May to mid-June and the second half of September are best: warm water, open houses, bearable wind. The July and August meltemi is real and can cost ferries and beach days.

Two islands in ten days work; three rarely do. The passage between them is part of the trip but costs half a day.

Tell us what your ideal afternoon looks like — boat, book or taverna. The island follows.
