Africa's most accessible country — and the one with the most variety per kilometre.
From Cape Town everything is close: wine estates in Franschhoek, the coast at Hermanus with whales from June to November, then the Garden Route with forest, lagoons and empty beaches.
The roads are good, the signposting clear, the driving on the left. Few African countries are so easy to self-drive — in the Kruger, guides from a private reserve take over.
The last stretch provides the contrast: from coast to bush by short flight rather than an eight-hour drive. Most travellers then return to Cape Town for two nights, which always repays.

Why we recommend it
Because you combine city, wine, coast and wilderness in one journey without anything feeling rushed — and because South Africa remains unusually accessible for what it offers.
- Best time to travel
- October to April for coast and winelands; May to September for the best game viewing in the Kruger. November and March are the best compromises.
- Suggested duration
- Fourteen to eighteen days.
- Who it is best for
- A first Africa journey, families, travellers who like to drive. Less suited to anyone planning long night drives — one does not do that there.
Pure Voyage note
Fly to the Kruger from George or Port Elizabeth rather than driving. The route is long and scenically thin — the two days saved belong to the bush.

Daylight. Do not drive long inter-town stretches after dark; that is the one hard rule. Five to six nights suits the Garden Route, four suits Cape Town. If a safari follows, fly that leg rather than drive it — the road is long and the least rewarding part of the trip.

- Self-drive or with a driver?
- Self-drive when the road itself is part of the pleasure — Tuscany, the Alentejo, the Highlands. With a driver when hairpins, cities or long stages would otherwise eat the day.
- How many nights per stop?
- Two at least, three ideally. One night per house means luggage rather than travel — and the best hours almost always come on the second morning.
