Rail journeys are usually booked for the wrong reason: the cabin. The appeal lies elsewhere — in the passage between two places you would otherwise fly over.
This recommendation names trains that work in different ways: one as an evening, one as a week, one as a slow crossing of a country. Alongside them, the houses that make sense before and after.
Why this recommendation exists
The question is rarely which train is the finest, but which suits your journey. Two nights aboard change a trip; seven ask for a different kind of traveller.
What this recommendation is not
If you expect hotel-scale comfort you will be disappointed. Cabins are small, nights are short, and that is part of it.

01 — Canal Grande, Venedig
A sixteenth-century palazzo on the Grand Canal, twenty-four rooms behind Tiepolo frescoes.

02 — Cernobbio, Comer See
A Renaissance villa of 1568, a hotel since 1873 and run without interruption ever since. The floating pool on the lake, the mosaic in the park, the height of the rooms — much of it exists only here.

Arriving via Milan, a day on the lake takes the pressure out of the journey home.
03 — Thornybush, Südafrika
Known for its guiding: the lodge employs some of the few highest-qualified trackers and guides in South Africa. If you want to understand what you are looking at, this is the place.

04 — Grumeti, Serengeti
An Edwardian manor on a hill above the Grumeti concession, looking across thirty kilometres of plain. The land is private, and the migration passes through between June and July.

How many nights aboard make sense?
Two for a first rail journey. The appeal is strong, but the space is small, and by the third night the cabin becomes honest. If you want more, choose a train that stables overnight. Always add a hotel night either side — the shift to a flight is otherwise abrupt.
