Travel calendar No. 07
July
While Europe takes its holidays, Africa comes into its best season.
July turns the map around. Southern Africa is in dry season: the grass is low, game gathers at water, and the mornings are cold enough for a coat in an open vehicle.
In Europe it is the month to choose places that carry crowds well — or to step aside from them.
Why this month
Why this month is special
For a first safari there is hardly a better month. Sightings are more dependable than at any other time, malaria risk is lower in many regions, and camps run with settled teams.
If you would rather stay in Europe, plan for islands with wind — the Aegean is more agreeable in July than the mainland.
How do you travel well in July?
North, or higher up — and with different hours. Scandinavia, the Alps and northern Spain are comfortable, while southern Italy and Greece bring heat and crowds together. If it must be the Mediterranean, choose a house with a boat or a private cove, sightsee before ten and leave the middle of the day deliberately empty.
