March

Transition: Asia still dry, Europe almost ready.

March has two faces. In Asia the most agreeable phase of the year is ending; in Europe it is only beginning. Both can be used, if the weeks are placed well.

Anyone travelling to Japan should know the difference between the first and last week of March: between them lies the start of the blossom — a different price, a different pace, a different city.

Why this month

Why this month is special

The last dry weeks in South-East Asia coincide with the moment European houses reopen. For flexible travellers, March is the finest month for a late winter journey without peak-season rates.

In Japan the blossom is less a date than a movement from south to north. If you want to see it, plan the route along that movement rather than along a list of cities.

Pure Voyage NoteSeasonal Note

What is particular about March?

It is a month of transition. Morocco and southern Europe become walkable, Japan approaches cherry blossom, and in southern Africa the green season ends. In Europe the coastal houses only open towards the end of the month while cities remain quiet. If Japan is the plan, it should already be booked — the blossom weeks went months ago.
