The quietest month — and for that reason one of the best.
February has few crowds and plenty of substance. Japan in winter is accessible in a way that disappears by spring: cold air, clear views, temple gardens without groups. The Indian Ocean holds its dry season.
It is the month for two very different journeys — one that turns inward, and one made only of light and water.

In Japan, the weeks between the new year and the blossom belong to the traveller. If you have ever wanted to see Kyoto without the press of people, this is the moment.
By the sea, February is the second half of the dependable season: the same conditions as January, often with more calm inside the houses.
What makes February worthwhile?
Reliable weather in the Indian Ocean and South-East Asia, plus Cape Town at the end of its summer. In Europe February suits cities and mountains, hardly the coast. One note: several countries hold school holidays this month — sought-after houses fill early and rates follow the holiday weeks.
