Travel calendar No. 01
January
The month travel moves south.
January is the clearest month of the year — not in Europe, but where the dry season has just begun. The Indian Ocean lies calm, South-East Asia is comfortably dry, and the houses have returned to their ordinary rhythm after the festive weeks.
Those who travel now usually travel longer. Ten to fourteen nights at one address make more sense this month than a circuit: the flight is long, and rest is the point.
Why this month
Why this month is special
Between the second and the last week of January there is a short window in which the Indian Ocean houses are well occupied but not full. Teams are settled, rates have left the festive peak, and the weather is as dependable as it ever gets.
In Europe, January is a month for cities: short days, empty museums, restaurants that still have a table.
What is January good for?
The southern hemisphere, and European cities without the crowds. The Maldives, the Seychelles and South-East Asia are at their best, Patagonia in high summer. In Europe the second half of January is the quietest stretch of the year — Venice, Vienna and Paris belong to their residents again. Book long-haul early; January is the most requested week of the year.
