Indonesia
Seventeen thousand islands — you only need two.
Indonesia is too large for one journey. The question is not what to see but what to leave out. Bali remains the easiest opening: temples, rice terraces and cooking inland around Ubud rather than in the coastal towns.
Go further and you reach Sumba, Flores or Sulawesi — islands with their own languages, their own rituals and coastlines where almost nobody lives. Those journeys take more effort, and they are the reason people return.
Why we like this place

Because Sumba still has villages of stone graves and high thatched roofs — not staged for visitors.

- Best time to visit
- May to October
- The dry season brings dependable weather and calmer water. From November to March the rain is heavy, usually in the afternoon; the islands are green then, and much emptier.
- Suggested length
- Ten to fourteen nights
- Three or four nights in Bali to begin, then seven on a second island. Shorter rarely justifies the flying.
What do travellers underestimate in Indonesia?
The distances. Bali, Sumba and Flores look adjacent on a map, but each move costs a flight and usually half a day. Two bases across fourteen nights works well. On Bali: inland Ubud in the morning, the coast in the afternoon — the traffic in between is routinely underestimated.
