Rwanda — Gorillas in the Cloud Forest

One hour you will still recall precisely years later.
The climb starts early and takes one to four hours depending on the family — steep, wet, through bamboo and nettles. Then you are sitting seven metres from a silverback and nobody speaks.
Rwanda has made the protection of these animals a matter of state: limited permits, fixed group sizes, high fees returned to parks and communities. The country is clean, safe and surprisingly easy to travel.
After the mountains, the south rewards you: Nyungwe with its chimpanzees and tea estates, or Lake Kivu, where the journey settles.

Why we recommend it
Because it is one of the few encounters in which the human being is unmistakably the guest. And because Rwanda's model shows that tourism can fund protection rather than erode it.

- June to September and December to February — the drier months. The cloud forest stays wet regardless.
- Suggested duration
- Seven to ten days; two permits on two days beat one.
- Who it is best for
- Travellers of ordinary fitness with genuine interest in conservation. Minimum age fifteen; altitude and gradient are demanding.

Two. The first is overwhelming and passes in a blur; on the second you actually look. Depending on the family, the hike takes one to five hours at altitude — solid boots, gaiters and a rain jacket are requirements, not suggestions. Permits are name-bound and should be confirmed early.
