Mesa Pool Suite
Amangiri — Canyon Point, Utah
Concrete, desert and a private pool that changes colour at five.
The Mesa Pool Suite sits at the edge of the house, facing the rock formations of southern Utah. The room is pared back: board-formed concrete, a fireplace, a bed turned towards the landscape.
The pool lies behind a low wall, sheltered from wind and from view. It is not an extra but the place where the afternoon happens.
Why we recommend this suite
Few suites work so consistently with their surroundings. Interior and desert are not separate but two states of the same room.
After sunset it becomes very quiet. Light the fire and you tend to stay outside longer than planned.
Who it suits
- Travellers who weigh architecture and landscape equally.
- Couples looking for a few days with a clear shape — walking in the morning, nothing in the afternoon.
- Less suited to guests who expect variety and places to go out.
What makes it special
The private pool
Visible from the bed, sheltered, and usable in both spring and autumn.
The fire
Outside, along the wall — in the evening the only light you need.
The orientation
Built to the east: sunrise over the mesa begins inside the room.
Is the private pool worth it?
In the desert, yes — less for swimming than for the hour after you return from an excursion, when the temperature drops and the rock changes colour. From November to March the pool is heated but rarely the point; the western orientation matters more. Two nights work, three are better.
