Alentejo, Comporta and the Douro Valley — Portugal at its quietest.

Portugal has been much discussed in recent years, and not every new address holds up to its photographs. We recommend four that do.

They sit deliberately away from Lisbon and the Algarve: in the cork oak forests of the Alentejo, behind the dunes of Comporta, and above the Douro terraces.

Monsaraz, Alentejo

Why we chose it

An estate held by the same family for two hundred years and reopened with care: stables became rooms, the village stayed a village. The Alentejo here is as empty as Europe rarely is.

Best for

Families and couples who want space, a working vineyard and country life at once.

Our favourite room

One of the cottages at the edge of the estate, with a terrace facing the holm oaks.

When to go

March to June and September to October; July and August turn very hot.

Pure Voyage note

The night sky is among the darkest in Europe. Walk out after dinner without a torch.

Quinta da Comporta

Comporta

Why we chose it

A house among rice fields, built from wood, lime and thatch in the local language. Comporta kept its character because nothing was built here for a long time — this house shows it.

Best for

Couples and families who want beach, bicycles and long afternoons.

Our favourite room

A villa with its own pool facing the rice fields; the main-house rooms are simpler.

When to go

May, June and September. The Atlantic stays cool and the wind comes with it.

Pure Voyage note

Carvalhal beach is ten minutes by bicycle across the fields. The best ride of the day.

Vermelho

Melides

Why we chose it

Thirteen rooms in the centre of Melides, furnished over years by Christian Louboutin with Portuguese craftsmen — azulejos, ironwork, regional furniture. A house with a signature that stands by it.

Best for

Travellers who enjoy colour, craft and conviction; not for everyone who wants minimalism.

Our favourite room

A courtyard room overlooking the pool; compact, but carefully made.

When to go

May to June and September. Melides is nearly empty in winter.

Pure Voyage note

It sits in the village, not on the coast. Daily swimming means a ten-minute drive.

Six Senses Douro Valley

Lamego, Douro

Why we chose it

A nineteenth-century quinta above the Douro terraces, with one of Portugal's best spas and access to estates that otherwise stay closed.

Best for

Couples and wine travellers who want landscape and tastings together.

Our favourite room

A main-house room facing the river; the villas suit families.

When to go

April to June and September to October — the autumn harvest is the finest time.

Travel the river once instead of the road. The terraces read differently from the water.

What surprises guests about Portugal?

The Atlantic. The water stays cool even in high summer and the west coast is almost always breezy — if you expect Mediterranean swimming, choose the eastern Algarve. The Alentejo is at its best in spring, when everything is green. Outside Lisbon a car is close to essential.
