There is a moment on every island journey — usually somewhere between the boat and the room — when the noise stops. Not gradually. It stops. What follows is the reason this chapter exists.
We have chosen places where nature is the architecture, and the buildings have the good manners to stay low. Pale rooms, salt on the windows, a path worn through the grass to the water. No spectacle. No ceremony. Simply the sense that you have arrived somewhere the world does not reach easily.
These are islands for reading, swimming and forgetting the hour.
