A city hotel has one obligation: to give the street back to you on your own terms.
Great cities are exhausting by design. The houses in this chapter exist to make that exhaustion optional — a room high above the traffic, a bath drawn at four in the afternoon, a lobby that behaves like a private club without ever saying so.
We have chosen addresses that belong to their neighbourhoods rather than float above them. The best of them send you back out again: to a bar three streets away, to a shop the concierge actually uses, to a walk you would not have found alone.
