Glaslodge auf Stelzen über einem Flusslauf im Krüger-Nationalpark

The Pure Voyage Edit — No. 02June 2026

Dry Season

Six notes on a month in which southern Africa opens up and Europe can still breathe.

Between June and October the travel year moves south. The vegetation of southern Africa retreats, the animals gather at the remaining waterholes, and the nights turn cold enough for a fire.

This edition follows that movement — with a detour to the Amalfi Coast, which in June is not yet overrun.

01The Return List

Singita Lebombo

Krüger, Südafrika

Fifteen glass-and-steel suites above the N'wanetsi River, in a private concession on the eastern edge of Kruger.

Why it matters
The architecture holds back where other lodges stage Africa. In the dry season the game comes right below the suites — you often see more from the deck than others do on a drive.
Who it suits
For first-time safari travellers who prefer distance from safari folklore. Five nights, June to September.

02Emerging Destinations

Botswana im Winter

Okavango-Delta

The delta paradoxically fills during the dry season: water from the Angolan highlands reaches Botswana months later.

Why it matters
Travelling in June or July gives you both — flooded channels and dry plains within a single change of camp. That is the essential reason not to plan Botswana in spring.
Who it suits
For experienced safari travellers wanting to combine water and land areas. At least seven nights across two camps.

03Hotels We Are Watching

One&Only Reethi Rah

Nord-Malé-Atoll, Malediven

An unusually large island with twelve private beaches — enough space that you may not meet the rest of the house for days.

Why it matters
In the Maldives, island size decides how a stay feels. Here you can do on foot or by bicycle what smaller islands make impossible: change place without leaving.
Who it suits
For families and for travellers who find small islands confining. January to April is more dependable than summer.

04Worth The Detour

Die Amalfiküste vor der Hochsaison

Kampanien, Italien

The coast road is still driveable in June, the lemon gardens are in leaf and restaurants have tables. From mid-July this changes entirely.

Why it matters
On this coast the difference between 20 June and 20 July is greater than the difference between two houses of the same standing. Given the choice, travel early.
Who it suits
For travellers who want Italy in summer without sitting in traffic. Four or five nights, better approached from the water.

05Remarkable Train Journeys

The Royal Scotsman

Schottische Highlands

A small train of forty guests that departs Edinburgh and crosses the Highlands in stages of a few hours.

Why it matters
The short legs are the real advantage: you are outdoors every day — on an estate, at a distillery, beside a loch — and return to the same compartment each evening.
Who it suits
For travellers who like trains but not long days seated. Late May to September; the June light is remarkably long.

06Journeys We Love

Safari & Wilderness

Südliches und östliches Afrika

Our selection of camps and lodges, ordered by landscape rather than brand — delta, savannah, montane forest, desert.

Why it matters
The most common error on a first safari is combining areas that are too alike. Two contrasting landscapes make a better week than three camps in one region.
Who it suits
For planning a first or second journey to Africa. Best begun six to eight months ahead.
