Travel example
Japan for the first time
Fourteen days, four stops, a country that is not understood in passing.
- Route
- Tokyo — Hakone — Kyoto — Naoshima
- Duration
- 14 days
- Season
- Late March to May, October and November
- Guide price
- from around €13,200 per person
First trips to Japan are usually over-planned. This one has four stops rather than seven, and days on which nothing has to happen.
Trains are reserved and luggage is forwarded between cities. It sounds minor and is the reason the trip feels light.
Itinerary
Nights 1–4
Tokyo
A quiet house high above the city
A guided day through Yanaka and Kagurazaka, an evening at a counter with eight seats, otherwise the city at your own pace.
View the houseNights 5–6
Hakone
Ryokan with a private onsen at the room
Two nights, not one. Only on the second evening does the rhythm of bath, dinner and early night make sense.
Nights 7–11
Kyoto
Machiya house or a small hotel in the north of the city
Two temples early, a day in Nara, an afternoon with a craftsman. Kyoto after three is a different city from Kyoto at eleven.
Nights 12–14
Naoshima and Setouchi
House on the bay looking over the inland sea
Art, ferries, bicycles. The quietest part, and the one guests remember longest.
